Lewis's Woodpecker in New York State

10,000 Birds

Second of all, Lewis’s Woodpeckers are birds of the west and they rarely stray to New York State. So you can imagine our disappointment when we crawled out of the car after our trip to find out that Mike was in fact relaxing in the warm kitchen and had no idea where the woodpecker was! Why is that awesome?

The Kerkini Lake, Greece: Dipped One, Got One

10,000 Birds

While crossing Gramos Mountain in northern Greece, a Dendrocopos woodpecker flew over the road and landed in a pine tree. I had two possibilities, an uncommon Middle Spotted or scarce White-backed Woodpecker – which would have been a lifer for me. One Grey-headed Woodpecker flies across the road – a promising start.

Though Three Lakes is popular with hunters I did not see single other person for the first two hours I explored. I had no luck with the woodpeckers but did hear the call note of a Bachmann’s Sparrow. Repeatedly.

Forest Bathing

10,000 Birds

From what I’ve been hearing, sport hunters are chomping at the bit to also return to the forest in droves. That corner was particularly fruitful as always, we even had appearances by a Cocoa Woodcreeper and a Chestnut Woodpecker. Within the same tree, a pair of Golden-olive Woodpeckers were also poking around.

The Nonessential Whooping Crane

10,000 Birds

So, one might surmise, it’s OK if they get shot by hunters thinking they’re sandhill cranes? What could motivate gunmen (I cannot call them hunters) in two states to deliberately kill North America’s tallest and most critically endangered bird? Do all hunters realize that? It gives one to wonder why this designation was made.
