Activists accused Norwegian companies of encouraging the killing because seal hunting was no longer allowed in their own country. Maybe Canada can learn something from the former KGB agent and avid hunter about compassion.

These two species make a good living eating seal carcasses and even hunting the chicks of other seabirds, and are correspondingly among the strongest legged of any of the petrels. That said there is nothing to suggest that the Black-footed Albatross actually killed the Laysan, there was no shortage of already dead chicks around.

Sperm Whales feed deep, diving to the bottom of the trench, hunting for a while, then rising again to catch a breath. The boat moves quickly past interesting things; Northern Giant Petrels , Buller’s Shearwaters , White-capped Albatrosses , New Zealand Fur Seals (I understand they will pause to see dolphins).

Another item they feed on is hunting edible bird nest swiftlets, which are quite common in edible swiftlet houses in Sabah, Malaysia ( source ). The first attempt in hunting was made by the male hornbill which was seen snapping at a passing swiftlet, but was unsuccessful. Then she tried to feed it to the remaining chicks.

The disease had killed a tourist like ourselves. The bacteria that laid me low earlier this year is a zoonosis, causing problems for New Zealand’s endemic seals as well as visitors to Borneo. Hunting, the bush meat trade, habitat loss, population increases, they all have a part to play in this story.
