The last beaver in the area was killed ten miles to the east – near Pancevo around the year 1900, but, reintroduced some dozen years ago, there are some 150 of them in the country nowadays. And that was the time when all 400 km2 were still open to annual rhythms of flooding and represented a famous waterbird hunting ground.

Meet Tim; he’s a baby Olive Ridley Turtle. On this one morning when I first met Tim, I counted 110 Olive Ridley Turtle nests exploding out and scuttling for the “saftey” of the ocean. Oh, look at all those parallel lines running down the beach, those are all baby turtle tracks as far as the eye can see!

Twenty years ago, flocks consisting of a thousand European Turtle Doves were a common sight in Serbia in spring. As we speak, in Serbia these birds are still hunted in August and September. Turtle Doves have been declining in Europe since the 1970s, and in this century alone, the continent has lost 40% of its population of the species.

The Cherokee nation called them “Peace Eagles” owing to the fact that they never killed a living thing – and also that they tended to show up in numbers after battled when peace treaties were being signed, though admittedly that may have been for a slightly more macabre reason. As it is critically endangered (there are only about 100 left), I think it can be forgiven for killing the occasional Pale Thrush (which is listed as Least Concern). Unfortunately, Hen Harriers die disproportionally near British Grouse moors – most likely killed illegally by people hunting grouse for sports ( source ).
