A pair of Yellow Warblers hunted insects in the canopy, and a Northern Waterthrush did the same just over the surface of the water. A Spectacled Thrush foraged among the leaf litter. Skirting around the international airport to the mangroves on its eastern end, we picked up Brown-crested Flycatcher and even more Barred Antshrikes.

Now that the colony is off limits for hunting, the population has grown and the village is benefitting tremendously from entry and guide fees, and a school is being built courtesy of conservation funds. From discussions with people who buy from breeders, I understand the reasoning behind getting a purebred dog when it comes to the hunting or working breeds. I'm sorry, every cat I've ever seen pretty much eats, sleeps and uses a litter box. There are certain characteristics that an owner may practically want.

Many friends and guests enjoyed seeing this particular bird soar, hunt, or even sit for hours in the valley. It glared at something in the leaf litter (is there any other way raptors look at anything?) White Hawk Not much else was going on. and flew off into the valley, where it caught an updraft and drifted into the white sky.

… [They] have long, downward-curved bills, used to work through the leaf litter … They are typically long tailed, dark brown above, and white or orange-brown below. The species is also hunted for local consumption in Meghalaya (India), according to the HBW. They have strong legs and are quite terrestrial.

To successfully hunt and breed they need clean and clear lakes, and so are sensitive to pollution that affects both them and/or their fishy prey. Unintentional fishing litter can also hurt the birds. Common Loon populations are relatively stable, though their southern range has retracted.

It took most of the rest of the day, but finally at around 5 we found the pack literally on the southern fenceline of the reserve, deep inside the hunting concession that made up the bottom of the park. Falakhe is still alive, as is the dominant male in his litter. We had to leave Fala to find the pack. I didn’t need to.
