both 2009 and 2010, the team located around 200 Spoon-billed Sandpipers-the majority of the world population-wintering in Myanmar, most of them in the Bay of Martaban where local people target wading birds for food. Tags: birds hunting endangered species.

Hongbenghe is directly at the border to Myanmar – before COVID-19, it was easy enough to walk across the border on foot, but now a monstrous long steel and barbed-wire fence separates the two countries. Fish & Wildlife Service has a web page for this species – but it contains absolutely no information.

Hongbenghe is a very small village in Yunnan, right next to the border with Myanmar. Even better, there is a wooden, unguarded, slowly decaying bridge over to Myanmar – so while I do not have the passport stamp to prove it, I can honestly say that I have been to that country as well.

Interestingly, these juveniles look more similar to another species, the Pale-billed Parrotbill, than the adult babblers – and they sometimes are part of the same flock.
