And while we’re working to ban captive boar hunts in New York why not ban all captive hunts? Real hunters don’t shoot animals raised in captivity or animals that are penned in, do they?

Tree Swallows squabbled and hunted in the air overhead and spent time examining the numerous nest boxes erected for them. But Red-winged Blackbirds weren’t the only birds that returned in numbers. Another icterid, Common Grackles , were back as well, and we spotted a small party of them foraging in the marsh north of the West Pond.

Bald Eagle image is by Francois Portmann and is used with permission You know, I’ve been thinking about this whole dustup over hunting cranes in Tennessee and now Kentucky. I think it’s time to hunt Sandhill Cranes. We’ve always hunted Bald Eagles. There was a lot of hunting for Bald Eagles—it is traditionally a game species.

The Marine Nature Study Area in Oceanside is one of the premiere places in New York to get great looks at a variety of saltmarsh species without having to slog through a saltmarsh. The Marine Nature Study Area is well worth a visit and I highly recommend that birders coming to the New York City area stop by.

Flatrock Brook is in the the city of Englewood, New Jersey, just across the George Washington Bridge from New York City. After all, there is no hunting and while I watched the turkeys they routed a feral cat that dared come near the flock of twelve which consisted of two tom turkeys and ten hens.

It is my belief that the birds were migrating, though one New York birder suggested that they might have been flying out for some crepuscular feeding. Either way, it was a heck of a sight and another example of why Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge is the best place in New York City to see amazing wildlife spectacles.

Eventually, it headed east out of sight and we continued our birding, only to join in a hunt for the kingbird when other birders arrived who wanted to see it. Western Kingbirds are not spectacularly rare in New York, being far more than annual, but having one in good light for an extended period is a rare treat.

I was only recently introduced to the airport by a fellow Queens birder who will remain anonymous here mostly because the property is owned by New York City and one technically shouldn’t be there.

The behavior could be especially disastrous for waterfowl, which are hunted by people, but less so for passerines, or perching birds, which regularly come into people’s bird feeders. In my neighborhood and across New York City, there are quite a few places with signs like the one above.

Judging by the number of Cape May Warblers that birders have been seeing around the New York City area over the last couple of years Canada must be in a period of increased Spruce Budworms , which is bad for the trees but good for us birders!

It’s not that they don’t still occur in Niagara Falls, New York. It was like so many other places where the young birds were stolen from nests, habitat was destroyed, and adult macaws occasionally hunted. Cardinals win us over with stunning colors, a pretty song, and common presence.

We were walking on the south side of the marsh, hoping to find some of the Common Redpolls that had invaded the New York City area the previous week when something made me look to my left and up and I saw a Short-eared Owl in flight that had evidently just been unintentionally flushed from the opposite side of the marsh by someone out for a stroll.

Blame human intervention in the form of breeding programs so that there would be more to hunt. New York City has famously taken to catching and gassing Canada Geese so it is actually getting difficult to find decent-sized flocks of the birds in Brooklyn and Queens. That is really a shame. It’s not my fault!

It was in the great borough of Queens in New York City that I first discovered both beer and birding, two great loves of my life that happily intersect with great regularity here at Birds and Booze. We had some great birding in New York City parks this past weekend and I managed to get my Queens wood-warbler count up to nineteen for the year. The black-and-white is abundant in spring migration here in New York though generally, once a birder checks it off for the year, it is ignored.

There is no better place to find grasspipers in New York State than the sod farms on eastern Long Island in autumn. It’s odd, then, that the best place to find them in the eastern United States is at sod farms, perhaps the only positive ecological impact of people wanting monocultured and manicured lawns.

Queens, the finest borough in New York City, as I may have mentioned before, is where I have now seen a whopping 279 species! It was hunting around the edges of the West Pond of Jamaica Bay back at the beginning of March, a day that I saw both the individual in Queens and one in Brooklyn. Snow Bunting – Yes!
