Keep birding and you might see a White-tailed Kite hovering as it hunts rodents and one of the few Bat Falcons in the Valley might dash into view. Their songs could cease any day now; their brushy field home is being steadily converted to housing.

A few nights ago, I sat out in a light snow/rain mix, in the pitch black of Madera Canyon, trying to find a Whiskered Screech Owl. By 7:30, two of the owls starting calling back and forth across the small ravine, and I had my 1300th bird! With four days to go in 2018, why not try for a few more, right?

It was our second trip out on this piece of highway this year and sadly the second deceased Barn Owl. Unfortunately we have only ever seen dead Barn Owls in the Broome area and one day it would be nice to see a bird hunting over the land. Grass Owls are also present in the area, but remain off our bird list.

Many are familiar with dissecting owl pellets, but several birds will caste a pellet including hawks, eagles, gulls, herons and heck, I once witnessed a Scissor-tailed Flycatcher hack up a small one. Dad-level bird jokes are right at home at Christmas Bird Count compilation dinners. I’ll admit to being momentarily faked out by the plastic owls that people put out in a futile attempt to ward off crows, which demonstrates that decoys work on birders, if not on birds themselves. I suspect it’s quite possible.

This years bird number 1300, the Whiskered Screech Owl, was found in the dark, in a snow storm, and no photo was gotten. Wandering the Sydney Australia Botanical Gardens, there were a large number of birds that could have made this list, like the Powerful Owl, but this photo of Little Wattlebird is one of my favorites from the area.

I love the challenge of “the hunt” and the satisfaction of the find but I also have the ones I want to see the most, my biggest targets if you will. Leaving the most wanted bird for last, the large white owl of the north is a dream for many a local birder. At least we have the Black-and-white Owl.

Working with the local jaguar conservancy, he learned that there are 10 or 11 different animals hunting peccaries and other prey at Selva Bananito. The Selva Bananito Lodge eBird hotspot has 381 bird species at the time of writing, including such specialties as the Great Curassow , King Vulture , Spectacled Owl and the Sunbittern.

And this one’s was definitely when a bird briefly took wing just to the left of our path, only to settle right back down to the ground. Like all members of the Nightjar family, the Buff-collared Nightjar hunts for insects on the wing, at night, and rests immobile during the day, protected by its subtle camouflage.

Like many “wildlife areas” it is open to waterfowl hunting during the season. As the finches flew from the tree tops down to a small creek for water, they occasionally flew back to the trees right above us giving the best views I have ever had of these cheerful seedeaters.

The first surprise came, as we were driving into town, and not one, but two Scissor-tailed Flycatchers flew right across the road in front of us. American Kestrels, Cooper Hawks , and Northern Harriers also found the hunting here to their liking. This one flew right over my head. This one happened to pass right over my head.

When we were at an amazing rock formation, called the Olgas, or Kata-Tjutas as the locals call them, this Nankeen Kestrel hunted all around me for well over 30 minutes before drifting away in search of better hunting grounds. This Pied Butcherbird was right at the base to Ayres Rock.

Anyway, we arrived, spotted a Great Horned Owl in flight and waited and waited and waited. Why bother with birds you can’t check off your list, right? He was right! Sadly, he couldn’t (or wouldn’t) so I had to content myself with just Burrowing Owls , Monk Parakeets , Loggerhead Shrikes , and Cattle Egrets.
