A Yellow-crowned Parrot digs in. At night, we keep our eyes out for the passage of the neighborhood Barn Owl , oftentimes a Tropical Screech-Owl would hunt insects from a low perch on our almond tree. Sometimes this Merlin ‘s mate comes to check him out, but for most of the northern winter he hunts solo.

To the right of the toucan, a Scaled Pigeon still rests comfortably, while one of many pairs of Orange-winged Parrots flies past in the background. Early morning is of course birding prime time and a pre-breakfast stroll around our lodge produced sightings of the lovely Orange-bellied Parrot , which we tracked down to a nesting hole right next to the restaurant. Splashes of color were added by cryptic Bruce’s Green Pigeons and more raucous Abyssinian and Lilac-breasted rollers.

On a quick browse, here are some facts I learned: Melanin helps to resist bacteria that attack feathers; most parrots are left-footed and this is associated with problem-solving; some birds nest in two different places in the same year. Not every huge white bird was a parrot though, and the lake also had a Great Egret among the Australian Grebes , Eurasian Coots and Dusky Moorhens. Much more exciting was the Blue-crowned Hanging Parrot that shot past, followed, on the rather slippery path to the caves, by several Rufous-winged Philentomas. A Bat Hawk hunting bats. For starters, the cave is surrounded by some rather nice forest. First off as we drove in was the Crested Serpent-eagle I’ve shown you before.

I was able to convince Murray Hunt to take us out for a morning cruise on the Daintree River, despite late notice, and that it was a Sunday morning that looked to be really crappy weather. The RV center was prompt, and we found Lake Placid RV Park, and I was off and running. This Male Shiny Flycatcher showed up right at the end of the trip.

They are one of the most attractive of Australia’s parrots, and one of the most common, benefiting from the planting of attractive flowering shrubs. The grassy areas were also patrolled by Laughing Kookaburras , which engaged in the typical watch and wait hunting methods of the kingfisher family, and the engaging Willie Wagtail.

Foxes were introduced to Australia in 1855 for hunting and have established themselves far and wide. There is a family of feral foxes that I often encounter near Bennison Creek. Brown Falcons , a Brown Goshawk, Wedge-tailed Eagles and also a Nankeen Kestrel hunted in the general area of the pool and were seen regularly during the day. There were two young Whistling Kites in the nest this year, but on dusk they would stretch out and looked like they would soon be leaving the nest to explore the area. Pallid Cuckoo.
