In early April, a spectacular parrot that can be found on just one island worldwide made the headlines when a volcano threatened it with extinction: the St. Vincent Parrot of the Lesser Antilles. The volcano eruption is only the latest of the many threats that the parrot has faced in the past century.

Not every huge white bird was a parrot though, and the lake also had a Great Egret among the Australian Grebes , Eurasian Coots and Dusky Moorhens. They are also hunted. Though it’s dry terrain and hunting might be hard here, there are good nesting sites, cool and shady, with some impressive snags rising thirty or forty feet, with bowls large enough to accommodate the massive belly of a brooding female Great Gray.
