Mating pairs are faithful for life and share the tasks of raising the young. Who doesn’t love a macaw?

Noisy Yellow-crowned Parrots indicated that it was time to stop the car and get out. These large parrots are popular in the pet trade, and that’s a likely source of the population of this species on Trinidad. Yellow-crowned Parrot. Finally, a faraway movement caught my eye. Grey-headed Kite. Common Black Hawk.

A Yellow-crowned Parrot digs in. Thankfully, they now have a home here where they can court, build their nest, and raise their young. At night, we keep our eyes out for the passage of the neighborhood Barn Owl , oftentimes a Tropical Screech-Owl would hunt insects from a low perch on our almond tree.

However, if we accept that some old reports were this species and not the very similar and easily confused Bat Falcon , it’s pretty likely that a few Orange-breasteds did hunt for Band-tailed Pigeons , parakeets, parrots, and other birds over the canopy of rainforests at the base of the Costa Rican mountains.

The lodge also has a raised saltwater pool – no excessive digging nor abrasive scent of chlorine in the rainforest – from which one can observe flocks of Crested Oropendolas attending to their pendulous nests in the nearby trees under the watchful eye of a Piratic Flycatcher.

We miss them all: the parrots, the pigeons, the moas and titan-hawks and stilt-owls and myriads of endlessly exotic avifauna we will never ever know again as they were when they graced this Earth. As climates are transformed, habitats plundered, and nonnative fauna carried to virgin hunting grounds, extinction rates are increasing.
