Its species name graydoni is in honor of Philip Newenham Graydon (1864-1940), a British planter in Sabah. The usual ducks were also present – Black-bellied Whistling Duck and White-cheeked Pintail. A pair of Yellow Warblers hunted insects in the canopy, and a Northern Waterthrush did the same just over the surface of the water. Our little group managed a final tally of 56 species!

Scores of Black-bellied Whistling Ducks circled overhead, these vocal ducks are often hunted illegally here so it was refreshing to see so many. Two species of icterids populated the area, the presence of either was a direct indicator of the degree of water present. We had no idea if the nighthawks would hunker down or flee.

The Shoebill does not simply present itself but rather, like any object of ardent affection, must be pursued diligently.
