No, wait,Red-shouldered Hawk dragged into the water by the weight of its prey, a giant rat. Redtails hunt at night… sometimes. Unfortunately since this isn’t their usual prey it takes some time. Osprey…? They will take baths but they prefer to do it on purpose. Red-tailed Hawks eat worms.

If however you are a larger “mouse”-like rodent you are a rat. The Common Buzzards , for example, who usually hunt by circling high above the landscape, will hover in kestrel fashion much more frequently. The kestrels , on the other hand, will more frequently hunt from low perches. No “gophers” etc.

One creature that doesn’t budge for the Nuthatch is the Brown Rat, and a pair of these rodents were demonstrating their agility by raiding the bird seed. Unwelcome visitor: a marauding Brown Rat I left Lynford with no unusual sightings, but the satisfaction of lots of close encounters with several of our commonest birds.

The combined effects of hunting, habitat loss and predation by introduced animals like rats and mongoose have extirpated the species from some islands and reduced numbers significantly on others. A recent focus has been on habitat preservation since wetlands in the Caribbean are a very scarce resource.

Here, thousands of Amur Falcons hunt for insects during the southern summer, Wattled Cranes and Denham’s Bustards may be seen, impressive Long-tailed Widowbirds display over the grasslands and the waterbodies are a haven to many hundreds of waterbirds, including Maccoa and White-backed Ducks. Keep birding and you might see a White-tailed Kite hovering as it hunts rodents and one of the few Bat Falcons in the Valley might dash into view. Lesser numbers of other common birds also occur; birds like the Gray-crowned Yellowthroat , Inca Doves , saltators, Groove-billed Anis , and other species.
