Nitin hopes to enlarge his collection of photos of Tigers. I am curious to see whatever awaits us in the Nagzira Tiger Reserve. In the morning, still sleepy, we enter the jungle, where a sounder of Indian Boars (a long-maned subspecies Sus scrofa cristatus ) is watching us, standing among the first trees, right next to the road.

To the right of the toucan, a Scaled Pigeon still rests comfortably, while one of many pairs of Orange-winged Parrots flies past in the background. Dusky-capped Flycatcher (lower right) and a Rufous-tailed Jacamar. Rufescent Tiger-Heron. Channel-billed Toucans were in abundance, calling from the canopy. Broad-winged Hawk.

Originally a hunting term, the Big Five were the most dangerous and prized targets of the great white hunters on safari. However it is now one of the world’s rarest animals after decades of relentless hunting and poaching. They are harmless to humans and their horns are used for wrestling other males for mating rights.

Pity, it is the sleeping hours and not the hunting (morning/evening), but at least they are not forced to socialise with people all day. What is the right stuff for you? In India, no one goes at mid-day because of the heat and the law. Yes, animals are guaranteed some time free of the camera-snapping crowds.

Brown Wild Indigo Duskywings were everywhere, as were the tiny Eastern Tailed Blue butterflies, plus a Tiger Swallowtail or two. Suddenly, a golden warbler with black streaks hopped to the top of a leafed out bush right in front of me! The gamelands proved to be an excellent place to butterfly that afternoon. Prairie Warbler.

In Singapore, Common Redshanks mostly drink Tiger Beer. Lesser Whistling Ducks are “not threatened by hunting as they are not considered good to eat” ( Wikipedia ). If you take a feral pigeon, bleach it and then batik it using the right colors, the result might be a Pink-necked Green Pigeon (1). Lucky ducks.

A winding track through dense woodlands takes us to the Telia Lake in the southeast of the Tadoba Tiger Reserve in Maharashtra. Our guide explains that it was discovered by tiger cubs and taken off to play with, hence the claw and tooth marks. All of a sudden, in a hushed voice he says one word only: “Tigers!”
