Moments later it came barreling down the cliff in a chase, scattering a herd of Blue Sheep in all directions, however it didn’t seem to reach striking distance of any of them. However, we were somewhat encouraged by spotting at least 10 herds of Blue Sheep (locally known as Bharal) on the slopes around this lower valley.

One raft of 20+ Mallards swims by the bank, right in front of jackals, careless like if they were just two sheep! They are sitting in the wet grass at the edge of the water, observing the bird movements around them. I am thrilled: this is more than just birding, this is a full-scale safari!

Foreign Languages on a Birding Trip

The first house had a sheep pen, with a pile of dung that clearly attracted a lot of insects and, further on, they attracted several Spotted Flycatchers , plus a large walnut tree with ripe nuts falling down ( Green Woodpecker , Eurasian Nuthatch , etc). His host’s house was smoke-blackened, everything but his shiny hunting rifles.

Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge

The other remarkable success story of Hart Mountain is the return of the Desert Bighorn Sheep. The combination of over hunting, and the native animals susceptibility to diseases carried by domestic livestock that were allowed to graze there, completely eliminated these Bighorns by 1915. I guess they were the greeters!
