The grouse season opens on 12 August: the birds are shot by driving them over the waiting guns (to call them hunters is inappropriate, as they are merely shooters, as no hunting is involved). Driven-grouse shooting is a very expensive sport, and is disliked by many people who would like to see it banned.

Cattails line parts of the ponds, all of this giving shelter to a very nice variety of birds. Black-necked Stilts are nesting along the waters edges, with Willets, Long-billed Curlews, Killdeer, Solitary Sandpipers, Spotted Sandpipers and Semi-palmated Sandpipers joining them in the hunt for food.

Houston Audubon instituted a ‘no hunting’ policy and by July 1995, there were 50 heron nests on the island, protected from mammalian predators by the large alligators in the waterways. The only shelter is at the Sailing Club and there are also picnic tables there too. It is definitely worth keeping your eyes to the sky in between all of the scanning across the water and down the slopes, because the area is an excellent hunting ground for both the Common Kestrel and the Common Buzzard. kilometres/2.25 Common Buzzard.

The bay itself is fairly large and sheltered from the elements, and one of the larger rivers draining the Main Ridge Forest Reserve empties into the bay on the northern end. As it got a little brighter, the terns took flight and began hunting in the shallows. Observing them hunt was almost as thrilling as being on the mission myself.

In the more sheltered areas the heathland is given over to eucalyptus forests. I’ve had a couple of great encounters with this species hunting lizards and frogs in the more open woodland areas, and of course it’s evocative call is a common sound anywhere there are enough trees.
