Eurasian Tree Sparrows from long ago

Since it’s really hard to type in a splint, here is a blast from the past: specifically from the beginning of this long, strange trip, my cross-country journey from New York to Montana: I have to confess, I had forgotten all about the Eurasian Tree Sparrow. I wasn’t thinking about the Eurasian Tree Sparrow at all, though.

Red-tailed Hawk Hunting a Gray Squirrel

Tired of White-throated Sparrows and American Robins , I decided to stroll over and see what the squirrel was so upset about. Judging by the banding and lack of red on the tail I would think that this hawk is only about a year old and should focus on hunting less crafty prey. Squirrels are hard too catch!

The Western Screech-Owl Nests in Tree Cavities

I was able to find the Common Redpoll among the flock of Lesser Goldfinches and Savannah Sparrows. I even got a halfway decent photo of it before heading a few miles away to see the American Tree Sparrow and Red-naped Sapsucker. Personally, I’m waiting for the irruption of Snowy Owls to reach northern California!

Best Bird of the Weekend (Third of October 2013)

Though Corey originally picked a Field Sparrow at Edgemere Preserve (like the one pictured above) as his Best Bird of the Weekend, an afternoon outing with his family back to Edgemere Preserve so Desi could chase after crickets and grasshoppers led to his revised Best Bird of the Weekend, a fortuitous find. How about you?

Tanzanian Starlings, Shrikes, and Weavers (Part 3)

Other weavers include the Grey-capped Social Weaver which is the size of a little sparrow. The Red-headed Weaver hunting silently in the treetops. Click on the image to see a Speke’s Weaver colony in action on an escarpment near Lake Manyara, Tanzania. And the splendid Spectacled Weaver nesting in my mother’s backyard.

Grassy Green Space in the Central Valley- Trash Habitat or Prime Real Estate for Oddball Birds?

In the erstwhile sanctuary, common species like Red-billed Pigeon , Blue-black Grassquit , and Rufous-collared Sparrow abound. Keep birding and you might see a White-tailed Kite hovering as it hunts rodents and one of the few Bat Falcons in the Valley might dash into view. It now occurs in various sites in the Central Valley.
