The exploration of triads within the avifauna of Trinidad and Tobago has taken me through various families and species groups on this blog. On the smaller island of Tobago there are three species of woodpeckers and three species of woodcreepers – one of each is found on Tobago but not Trinidad.
Belgrade, the capital city of Serbia, offers several great birding spots and here are some recommendations for areas to go birding in and around the city, how to get there by public transport, and some of the bird species you might expect to see. It is home to almost a hundred bird species, including woodpeckers and songbirds.
Woodpeckers and finches The top of the city would be the highest peak of the Avala Mountain Reserve (511 m / 1700 ft above sea level), with the Memorial to the Unknown Hero and overgrown with firs and pines. In Belgrade, Serbia, winter months offer surprisingly good birding possibilities. Photo Snezana Panjkovic.
She enjoys seeing all species of birds, but her favorites are hummingbirds. The usual, friendly types are chickadees, nuthatches, and some woodpeckers. A female Pileated Woodpecker We saw a few more birds along the boardwalk. A Red-shouldered Hawk was crying as it hunted. A Pileated Woodpecker slipped through the trees.
Today, he talks about a crazy woodpecker… A couple of years ago there was a big controversy on NPR about woodpeckers. Well, especially about one woodpecker — probably the most famous woodpecker in the world — Woody. Unlike other woodpeckers, you often see them foraging on the ground.
Since I’m not exactly an ornithological expert, this ranking is purely based on my personal thoughts and impressions of these species. P.S.: If you’ve read my previous post, you won’t be surprised to find out that the Great Spotted Woodpecker didn’t make it onto this list!
My family took our annual post-Easter Egg hunt hike at Powder Mills Park, where I spied several gorgeous matched pairs of Wood Ducks along with lots of different woodpeckerspecies. The month and this particular period is all the more auspicious for me and mine, as so many friends and families celebrate spring birthdays.
It was also great to finally travel overseas again, meet a lot of people I did not know (and some I did), to be in a new country… and not just the new country, but its best birding area, where almost all local hotspots are yellow (150+ species) and several are ochre (200+ sp.), impressive for Central Europe.
For once, eBird gives a good description of the Asian Glossy Starling, calling it a “Fierce-looking, large songbird” As are humans, this species is fairly urbanized – it “sometimes enters urban areas to roost, e.g. in Singapore” (HBW). Lucky ducks. “Odd, me?” But the joke simply does not work then).
On the slow crawl into the farm, the first sighting was a small group of Green Ibis – a new species for me. Most notably of which was a pair of Blood-colored Woodpeckers. Endemic to the Guianan shield, this species has captivated me since I first laid eyes on a photograph of it. I had never before seen a Limpkin do this.
Ascending further requires a hike – required to see some high-elevation species absent from elsewhere on the island. The machine-gun drumming of a Chestnut Woodpecker greeted us once we alighted from the vehicle. No visual on the woodpecker, sadly – several Scaled Pigeons bolted from the treetops as we searched, though.
On a recent visit I threw my bags in the hotel room and went straight there, and got over 60 species of birds in a few hours and fantastic views of Nilgai , the largest antelope in India. Commoner species include Bar-headed Geese , parakeets, shrikes, mynas and minivets. You should also see Gharial and Mugger Crocodiles there.
With that logic those trees, if left to grow, should produce something of use to at least one or two species of birds. It’s been some years since I’ve seen any Short-tailed Hawks as the entire valley is now overrun with concrete – but I’m trying my best to create some sort of oasis for any species.
Not how many bird species , but how many bird individuals. The Wagbachniederung is reknown for its waterfowl, shorebirds, and good breeding populations of several species that are very localized in Germany. I want to know – just roughly – how many birds I have seen in my life.
Great Gray Owl , Northern Hawk Owl , Snowy Owl – this trinity captures the imagination of most birders with their imposing presence, unique adaptations, and beauty as among the most desired species of bird to see in the world. On the third day, we finally connected with the species I wanted to see the most and just could not miss.
a British expat birder who was living in Belgrade, for a suggestion: “The top species is undoubtedly White-tailed Eagle. commented further: “With a little work some species can be seen quite easily such as the divers, scaup, scoter, Goosander , Garganey and Long-eared Owl. Hence, I asked my friend B.C.,
Sadly, the HBW states that the species is “almost extinct in some areas in China owing to hunting and trapping for the cagebird trade and taxidermy” The Maroon Oriole looks much more interesting, though my photos do not really do it full justice. This Great Spotted Woodpecker isn’t even trying to hide its spots.
Here, thousands of Amur Falcons hunt for insects during the southern summer, Wattled Cranes and Denham’s Bustards may be seen, impressive Long-tailed Widowbirds display over the grasslands and the waterbodies are a haven to many hundreds of waterbirds, including Maccoa and White-backed Ducks. A lovely male Cape Rock Thrush by Adam Riley .
Swifts are aplenty, one is likely to see Gray-rumped , Band-rumped , or Short-tailed Swift hunting insects each morning. One step away from swifts are hummingbirds, and at least 13 species of these winged jewels flutter about from sunrise to sunset. Interesting. Yes, Red-bellied Macaws not only mate on the property, but nest here too!
But how birds use these different senses, like the diversity in bill size and shape, varies almost as much from species to species. Chickens come in at around 24, pigeons have around 40-50 and some duck species may have a whopping 400. The longest bird bill relative to body-size.
The Veliko Ratno Island birdlist is about 170 species long, of which more than 90 were observed from the Dorcol Promenade. Highlight species: Ferruginous Duck , Goosander , Red-breasted Merganser , Red-crested Pochard , Greater Scaup , Velvet Scoter , Black-throated Diver. In March and November, Common Cranes are a possibility.
On my 21-day Kenyan safaris we reckoned to find around 600 species of birds and around 60 mammals, both impressive totals. In 2023 I attempted to keep a year list of mammal encounters: the list barely exceeded 20 species, while it became complicated by seeing bats and voles that I was unable to name specifically.
There’s an unofficial series of posts on species of birds that occur in threes in T&T (see: bitterns , trogons , antshrikes , spinetails , manakins , hermits , honeycreepers , and resident warblers ). Nothing showed except for a Lineated Woodpecker which I only saw as it flew off. Grey-headed Kite. Broad-winged Hawk.
It would be uber cool to lay eyes on a rare lifer, on species that only seem to live on the pages of a field guide but isn’t that somewhat discriminatory? And why spend time only looking for one or two species when those hours could be used to put binos focused on a few dozen? Rufous-winged Woodpecker. Great Green Macaw.
The Trinidad Motmot is the only endemic species on the island. In addition to the species mentioned before, it is easy to have incredible looks at Red-crowned Woodpeckers , Barred Antshrikes , and Rufous-vented Chachalacas as they frequently are attracted to the fruit feeders. But I know, we’re here for the birds.
Not even 60 species worldwide? My mind wandering off: A century ago, birding meant hunting birds and we stole the term from hunters – it may be time to steal another one: “Lord John came abreast of me, however, and his face was more grave than was his wont. There are some 56-57 species worldwide which hardly presents a challenge.
A pair of Yellow Warblers hunted insects in the canopy, and a Northern Waterthrush did the same just over the surface of the water. This endearing and very familiar species grabbed the attention of all present, including the official event photographer from the THA! Our little group managed a final tally of 56 species!
Mostly the ducks were Red-breasted Merganser and Greater Scaup , the two most prevalent species on the pond, but there were a few other birds mixed in as well. The Trumpeter Swans above, for example, winter in Washington’s Skagit Valley, where Hashimoto “attempted to capture the low light and soft grays of winter,” while also rejoicing in this conservation success story–in the early 1960’s the swan numbers in the Valley were down to 15 due to hunting, they now number 11,000.
Fernandina’s Flicker, a tongue-twisting alliterative name for one of the most endangered woodpeckers in the world! Navarro’s exceptional drawings illustrate the species accounts. Forty-eight species. Bee Hummingbird, the smallest hummingbird in the world! Cuban Black Hawk, split in 2007 from Common Black Hawk!
I submitted five checklists from four different locations yielding 44 species. As the Red-Shouldered Hawk seen above screamed overhead, Acorn Woodpeckers not only treated themselves to the woodpecker feeder, they had to attack the sunflower feeders as well. All in all, I tallied 44 species. Fun birding!
Like many “wildlife areas” it is open to waterfowl hunting during the season. In total we counted seventeen species at the rest stop! We stopped at the entrance to the wildlife area (see the sign above) where there is a small kiosk with bird lists and hunting regulations as well as maps of the facility.
I had never seen this species of kite before, but Guhin explained that they often hunted in the natural acres of the reserve. The ES NERR is a world-renowned biodiversity hotspot, drawing birders from around the country and around the globe, all happy to see as many of the over 200 species recorded here as possible.
I’ve been to this part of central Alabama before, but always during hunting season, my schedule built around the ridiculously early mornings (i.e. In the mid-morning heat of August, I had already missed the best birding window in a relatively poor time of year for spotting too many species, but I didn’t care. Totally not.
When you have birded a single area as much and for as long as I have birded Michoacán, it becomes progressively harder to find first-time species (“lifers”) there. I had seen several species turn up in new and unexpected places there, but none of them were birds that I had never seen before. … or Green Herons.
I live in upstate New York where only one of these two species occurs. and the species name will appear. I still prefer to use the field markings as the decider between the species. Share Your Thoughts « Best Bird of the Weekend (Second of March 2011) Sandhill Crane Hunt in Kentucky?! But not while flying.
One thing you must do is hire a local guide, as while you can hunt for yourself you’ll see a hell of a lot more with one. This small bustard is perhaps the same species as the more widespread White-bellied Bustard, but if it is separate its a rare bird to see and pretty special. It was also weirdly good for quail, of sorts.
At some stage, a salmon-hunting bear at a shingle beach came too close, mere 9 steps. Finally, the list of birds mentioned in the examples include: Acorn woodpecker, Melanerpes formicivorus. Cactus finch, Geospiza species. Galapagos cactus finch, Geospiza species. Arctic tern, Sterna paradisaea. Canary, Serinus canaria.
I was not happy to learn that after spending most of the afternoon flying from perch to perch and actively hunting the owl had disappeared into some evergreens twenty minutes earlier. A couple of Red-winged Blackbirds , some Common Ravens , a flyover Pileated Woodpecker. Why did we stop for lunch!?!?!)
The river itself was open and Mallards were the most common species to be seen with Great Cormorants and Common Mergansers (in Europe, Goosanders ) the next most likely two. Perhaps most exciting was a Northern Goshawk that we spotted hunting along the river a couple of times. Heh heh heh, Blue Tit , heh heh heh.

Tomorrow, MARCH 15, 2011, is the deadline for public comment on a proposal to hunt sandhill cranes in Kentucky. Kentucky Dept.
Kind of an innocent version of tropical China, but I guess that is a rather naive view … Most birders coming here presumably do not have babblers as their main targets, even though there are quite a few species here, and some of them are quite attractive as well. Take the Scaly-crowned Babbler , with its chestnut crown.
Now that I have driven that to a state of relative completion and I am compelled to return to the forest, I learned that the government here has re-opened the hunting season. After experiencing the ebb and flow of energies over the years with the coming and going of the annual five month long hunting season, the strain is plain for me to see.
While crossing Gramos Mountain in northern Greece, a Dendrocopos woodpecker flew over the road and landed in a pine tree. I had two possibilities, an uncommon Middle Spotted or scarce White-backed Woodpecker – which would have been a lifer for me. One Grey-headed Woodpecker flies across the road – a promising start.
