The Kerkini Lake, Greece: Dipped One, Got One

While crossing Gramos Mountain in northern Greece, a Dendrocopos woodpecker flew over the road and landed in a pine tree. I had two possibilities, an uncommon Middle Spotted or scarce White-backed Woodpecker – which would have been a lifer for me. One Grey-headed Woodpecker flies across the road – a promising start.

She enjoys seeing all species of birds, but her favorites are hummingbirds. The usual, friendly types are chickadees, nuthatches, and some woodpeckers. A female Pileated Woodpecker We saw a few more birds along the boardwalk. A Red-shouldered Hawk was crying as it hunted. A Pileated Woodpecker slipped through the trees.

Forest Bathing

Now that I have driven that to a state of relative completion and I am compelled to return to the forest, I learned that the government here has re-opened the hunting season. After experiencing the ebb and flow of energies over the years with the coming and going of the annual five month long hunting season, the strain is plain for me to see.
