They are endemic to New Zealand, but unlike many endemic species that have not suffered at the hands of humans, in fact they have expanded their range as forests have been opened up for pasture. They are the only endemic duck species that hunting is permitted for, in fact, the other species being either too rare or outright extinct.

Without adequate funding, habitats are not restored, invasive species are left unchecked, poaching and other illegal activities occur and our nation’s wildlife suffers 1. She says, “there’s just a cultural bias against anything related to hunting.” And some members of Congress want to cut funding dramatically 2.

The combined effects of hunting, habitat loss and predation by introduced animals like rats and mongoose have extirpated the species from some islands and reduced numbers significantly on others. Between 1985 and 1991, the ducks suffered a further drastic decline with fewer than 100 birds estimated from Grand Cayman.

Illegal capture for the wild animal trade is an obvious peril for such a charismatic species, but this big blue bird is also hunted both for its meat and feathers. Last but certainly not least, the macaw suffers along with the other species in its ecosystem from rampant habitat destruction and deforestation.

A community of which I count myself as a member, not so oddly enough, so you’re just going to have to either suffer through this anecdote or try to appreciate the tiny victories that birding can bring you. These sorts of things are interesting to a small, and likely deranged, community of people. Or you can skip it.

We arrived at Maclay Flat just in time to see three men unloading the sort of heavy-duty optics and camera equipment that signals serious birders on the hunt. My erstwhile classmate Asta answered the call, and away we went. Not only did they, but they invited us to tag along with them. My hopes, to be honest, were not high.

When I reached the levee earlier that morning, I met an elderly hunter from whom I learned that there was an ongoing duck and pheasant hunt, but no one was shooting from, nor towards the embankment, hence I should be safe there. Photographed within Beljarica: six wild boars by Snezana Panjkovic.
