My family took our annual post-Easter Egg hunt hike at Powder Mills Park, where I spied several gorgeous matched pairs of Wood Ducks along with lots of different woodpecker species. The month and this particular period is all the more auspicious for me and mine, as so many friends and families celebrate spring birthdays.

Lesser Whistling Ducks are “not threatened by hunting as they are not considered good to eat” ( Wikipedia ). However, unfortunately, this seems to be mainly true for Laced Woodpecker (female) … … and Greater Flameback (female). Swifts are aplenty, one is likely to see Gray-rumped , Band-rumped , or Short-tailed Swift hunting insects each morning. Stands of large trees attract the largest woodpecker in T&T: Crimson-crested Woodpecker. Yes, Red-bellied Macaws not only mate on the property, but nest here too!

Here, thousands of Amur Falcons hunt for insects during the southern summer, Wattled Cranes and Denham’s Bustards may be seen, impressive Long-tailed Widowbirds display over the grasslands and the waterbodies are a haven to many hundreds of waterbirds, including Maccoa and White-backed Ducks. There is a breeding pair of White-tailed Eagles at the Veliko Ratno Island and they can be seen year-round, but the best chances are in winter, when they hunt ducks around the island. In March and November, Common Cranes are a possibility. Tactics: Aim for early mornings and from the end of April, carry an insect repellent for mosquitoes.

Nothing showed except for a Lineated Woodpecker which I only saw as it flew off. Raptors were in no short supply, and in addition to a Savanna Hawk , Grey-lined Hawk , and an extremely brief view of a Double-toothed Kite as it careened over the canopy later on, we saw a couple Broad-winged Hawks characteristically hunting from a low perch.

A pair of Yellow Warblers hunted insects in the canopy, and a Northern Waterthrush did the same just over the surface of the water. Skirting around the international airport to the mangroves on its eastern end, we picked up Brown-crested Flycatcher and even more Barred Antshrikes. A Spectacled Thrush foraged among the leaf litter.

In addition to the species mentioned before, it is easy to have incredible looks at Red-crowned Woodpeckers , Barred Antshrikes , and Rufous-vented Chachalacas as they frequently are attracted to the fruit feeders. Within the branches of these very trees, Ochre-bellied, Streaked, Brown-crested, Fuscous and Yellow-bellied Flycatchers hunt.
