Illegal capture for the wild animal trade is an obvious peril for such a charismatic species, but this big blue bird is also hunted both for its meat and feathers. You might also want to see how the World Parrot Trust works to protect parrots in the wild. I love toucans too, but who knew they ate baby macaws?

One of the major challenges in combating the bushmeat trade is identifying the source species for the meat and products. Once an animal has been carved up, meat looks like meat and leather looks like leather. How is anyone to know if it came from a species that is protected under national or international law?

One of my most vivid memories of watching The Sopranos – still the best TV series ever, in my opinion – is Tony outside barbecuing, occasionally turning the different pieces of meat. On a side note, the bird is also kind of ugly, so maybe the chicks never seeing their father has a certain protective function.

I foresee a day, perhaps not far in the future, in which it is illegal to raise cows, pigs, and other animals for food. It is that coercion (via legal prohibition) is not a proper method of protecting animals, at least if the aim is to protect animals. Some will reduce their consumption of meat for the sake of the animals.

In all European Union countries to the north and east of Serbia (except Romania), Turtle Doves are strictly protected. Money and effort are being invested in that protection. The cargo consisted of huge number of protected passerines such as larks and pipits, beside huntable species like Common Quails and Turtle Doves.

The Rhinoceros Hornbill is the state bird of the Malaysian state of Sarawak ( source ), which unfortunately does not prevent hunting of the bird, not only for meat but also for the feathers. Another advantage to ballistic food transport is that the fruit seeds are protected from damage when they are swallowed whole.
