In early April, a spectacular parrot that can be found on just one island worldwide made the headlines when a volcano threatened it with extinction: the St. Vincent Parrot of the Lesser Antilles. The volcano eruption is only the latest of the many threats that the parrot has faced in the past century.

Costa Rica is a country situated well south of the Tropic of Cancer and like most places without a winter, parrots are an essential part of the local avifauna. Fancy bird like this Brown-hooded Parrot are common in many forested parts of the country. White-crowned Parrot. White-fronted Parrot.

Even better, just a few meters away from the food vendors, it is not too crowded, and the palm trees attract a number of birds, including two species of parrots. The first one is the Blue-naped Parrot. It is listed as Near Threatened, partly due to the usual occurrence of illegal trade for the pet market.

Cape Parrot The Cape Parrot is one of the world’s most threatened parrots. A light green parrot with a brown head and red shoulder patches, these birds have been threatened by the reduction of large trees like yellowwoods, disease and by illegal trapping for the cage bird trade.

There is a painfully bad song called “Drunk Bird Watching” on You Tube but the only “bird” seems to be someone saying “hello” like a caged parrot. Considering how hard it can be to focus one’s eyes when drunk I imagine it would be even more difficult to focus optics.

When I read the description of the Mulga Parrot on a pet website, I first thought it was an advertisement for Thai mail-order brides: “The exotic appearance of the Mulga Parrot might be what attracts you first, but it’s their personality that will win you over” ( source ). Like the figbird, it mostly feeds on fruit.
