European Call to End Bird Trapping

From July 6-8, there was a European conference in Larnaca about illegal bird killing , organized by Terra Cypria. The concluding tone of the conference was also on a very positive note, with Cyprus pledging to adopt a “Zero-tolerance&# policy against illegal trapping activities. So it’s not a good week in Cyprus!

Birding Tanjung Aru Beach, Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia

As the rice paddies near Kota Kinabalu described in an earlier post , Tanjung Aru beach is not really a major birding spot in its own right. It is listed as Near Threatened, partly due to the usual occurrence of illegal trade for the pet market. It is listed as vulnerable, again as a consequence of illegal trade and habitat loss.

Artist Sentenced for Wildlife Trafficking

Artist Enrique Gomez De Molina was sentenced to 20 months in prison and a $6,000 fine in Miami on Friday for trafficking in illegal and threatened wildlife. “In promoting that message, he fell grievously from doing things the right way and became one of the very people he tried to educate,” Kuehne said.
