There’s a Three-striped Palm Squirrel by the side of the track, while Jungle Bush Quails are running across it in front of our Maruti Gypsy, almost the official safari vehicle of India. Another species apparently enjoying the proximity of a monastery is the White-winged Grosbeak. Still, this way or another, the year is ending with some glorious species, e.g. a rare Greater Spotted Eagle. But through binoculars I noticed small raised crests and supercilia joining on hindneck – Woodlarks ! The search is on.

After writing this last sentence, I looked up the species in the HBW and found the sentence “Song poorly documented” in the appropriate section, while with regard to calls, the description is that “call is a two-note raspy nasal ‘ryeeh-reh’”. The Yellow Bittern is a tiny heron, substantially smaller than the Butoroides (Green and Striated) species and slimmer too. It is an adherent to fresh water lakes, canals and swamps from India through East Asia, Indonesia and New Guinea. It likes plenty of cover as one would imagine of a bittern species and especially favours Pandanus.
