If you are an Indiana Jones-obsesee, such as me, you may already be aware of Petra. It was featured prominently at the end of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. For me, there are a few places I can think of that I yearn for – although I have never been. One such place was somewhere that I never thought I would ever actually go: Petra.

You can own a gorilla in Indiana, but not a bear in Michigan. They can spend a little more money and effort, and get an Exhibitor Permit for public display. One’s ability to own an exotic species varies from state to state. For instance, you can own a lion in Alabama, but not in California.

The very first time I held them, the very first look through them, I just knew: this is it, this is the pair for me. Although I did test them thoroughly later, I knew from that first sight, this pair was made for me.

When I was kid, I tried to turn every House Finch we had in Indiana into a Purple Finch. Trying to figure out if one is a little bit more raspberry red from another was the id of choice as the local bird ladies told me. I was also trying to see how far down the pink coloration went on the body. The above bird is clearly a male House Finch.

Yet again a Whooping Crane has been shot and killed in Indiana. Let’s hope that this time the perpetrator gets more than a $1 fine.

In addition to North Carolina, six other states have named the cardinal their state bird, including Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Virginia, West Virginia, and Ohio. I’m not the only one who appreciates the Northern Cardinal.

But the turkey vultures would certainly leave the places we saw them – Montana, North Dakota, Illinois and Indiana, Pennsylvania and Ohio and eventually New York – and head south. The only bird we saw in every state was the Turkey Vulture. No vast kettles, yet, only ones and twos.

An Indiana man, Wade Bennett, and a minor have pled guilty for their involvement in the shooting and killing of a critically endangered Whooping Crane way back in 2009, and been sentenced to probation and the paying of fines and fees. Thee is still no information on the more recent killings of the majestic birds.

Everywhere cranes gather, from New Mexico to Indiana to Tennessee, people come to watch them. More than 10,000 people hunt cranes in North America each year.

They have been used not only in Jurassic World, but also in Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark , despite the latter movie’s setting in the jungle! They are also rarely spotted farther south: in April of 2014, Corey saw one in New York (he also took the photo above)!

Not to be outdone, Indiana Dunes Birding has a report on the Snowy Owls in the Hoosier State. At the Nemesis Bird Tim Shrekengost featured Snowy Owls digiscoped with his iPhone 5. The Stokes checked out some Snowy Owls in New Hampshire and Massachusetts.

The state of Indiana has been soliciting comments for a bill which would make the above scenario legal for 90 days, creating an uproar among those who are licensed to care for injured and orphaned wildlife. This is always, always a bad idea.

Greg Majewski is a relatively new birder but he is not letting that stop him from trying to reach 250 species in Indiana this year. Rangel Diaz is doing a big year in Miami-Dade County, Florida, hoping to reach 300 species, and keeping a blog about it. Check out EPIC Big Year 2013. That would be more species than are on his life list!
