Ethical vegetarianism is the thesis that killing and eating animals is morally wrong whenever equally nutritious plant-based alternatives are available. They realize that factory farming is inhumane. Meat eaters (and even some lacto-ovo-vegetarians) think this way because they mistakenly think that vegans eat an austere, bland diet consisting mostly of twigs and seeds with occasionally some plain tasteless tofu thrown in. Life without meat seems unbearable to them.

Animal agriculture is inherently inhumane. In my 40s, I became a vegetarian because I was saving sick and injured birds, and I just couldn’t eat them and save them.
