For the fifth year in a row, I was assigned the prolific and well-known Aripo Livestock Station at the foothills of Trinidad’s Northern Range. For birders who have visited T&T in the past, the livestock station has always been a staple site for several key species that would be fairly difficult elsewhere.

But federal regulators are failing to control pollution from the gigantic operations or assess health risks from the enormous quantities of manure they produce, according to congressional investigators. Deregulation is EVERYWHERE.

And of course, there are Cattle Egrets ( Bubulcus ibis ) and several species of cowbirds that rarely stray too far from livestock. For most of history, beer has thrived in agrarian settings, too. It’s true that grassland bird conservation can often seem at odds with farming and it doesn’t help that some birds are viewed as agricultural pests.

Their fragile homes, meager belongings and scant livestock attested to this, and yet the people seemed content with their lot in life. Mago National Park certainly deserved more exploration and I wished we had time to investigate the well appointed campsites along the Mago River.

There is an abundance of information on the web about undercover investigations, livestock conditions, slaughter procedures, etc. Livestock don’t contribute to campaigns, but agribusiness does. Undercover investigative pieces have shown that some unhinged workers take out their frustrations on the farm animals.
