The Avibase China birdlist counts 7 species of minivets for China – one of which is the Ashy Minivet. For Japan, there are only two species listed – again the Ashy Minivet, but also the Japanese Minivet (mostly called Ryukyu Minivet elsewhere), a Japanese endemic which is not on the China list.

I like this opinion piece from the Christian Science Monitor which calls for an "Endangered Species Hour." The Christian Science Monitor rightly points out that citizens and consumers need to get involved in endangered species protection, because at the CITES level, it's all about money and international politics.

Somewhat strangely, the HBW calls it a “small grey to yellow babbler” – while the species indeed has some grey parts, that is not the color that sticks to mind when seeing or remembering the bird. Plus the sibia apparently plays an important role in the pollination of one endangered rhododendron species ( source ).

Less Birds Around Fukushima

A team of researchers has found that the populations of common birds around the stricken Fukushima nuclear plant in Japan has plummeted. Most disturbingly, the populations of species that the area has in common with Chernobyl has fallen more in Fukushima than they did in the site of worst nuclear disaster in world history.

Birding in Nanhui, Shanghai in October 2019

A typhoon in Japan blew a few Brown-eared Bulbuls in – they are common in Japan but quite rare here. Always interesting to see the same species both in Germany (in my parents’ garden) and in Shanghai. The Blue-and-white Flycatcher is not that rare at Nanhui during migration season, but too beautiful not to be shown.

Crested Serpent-eagle

The Spilornis serpent-eagles are represented by a number of insular species and one widespread mainland species, the Crested Serpent-eagle. This species ranges from India to Japan and south down Borneo. In Borneo it is typically found in lowland areas compared to the mountain species.
