Birding the Datang area, Yunnan

10,000 Birds

Somewhat strangely, the HBW calls it a “small grey to yellow babbler” – while the species indeed has some grey parts, that is not the color that sticks to mind when seeing or remembering the bird. Plus the sibia apparently plays an important role in the pollination of one endangered rhododendron species ( source ).

A Japanese in China

10,000 Birds

The Avibase China birdlist counts 7 species of minivets for China – one of which is the Ashy Minivet. For Japan, there are only two species listed – again the Ashy Minivet, but also the Japanese Minivet (mostly called Ryukyu Minivet elsewhere), a Japanese endemic which is not on the China list.

A winter miscellany

10,000 Birds

Lynford also boasts an arboretum, with 200 different species of trees. Today, in southern England, we rarely have the luxury of trying to tell the two species apart, as Willow T**s have declined so severely that they are now virtually extinct in East Anglia. The exception was a single (Eurasian) Nuthatch.

The Garrulous Jay

10,000 Birds

I remember once reaching over 130 species (a good total for a May Day in England) without having seen or heard a Jay, despite spending time in oak woodland. Not only eggs but nestling birds of many species fall prey to the Jay.” It’s a different matter in the spring. There are no fewer than 27 recognized subspecies in six groups.

Christian Science Monitor Calls for Endangered Species Hour

Critter News

I like this opinion piece from the Christian Science Monitor which calls for an "Endangered Species Hour." The Christian Science Monitor rightly points out that citizens and consumers need to get involved in endangered species protection, because at the CITES level, it's all about money and international politics.

Birding in Nanhui, Shanghai in October 2019

10,000 Birds

A typhoon in Japan blew a few Brown-eared Bulbuls in – they are common in Japan but quite rare here. Always interesting to see the same species both in Germany (in my parents’ garden) and in Shanghai. The Blue-and-white Flycatcher is not that rare at Nanhui during migration season, but too beautiful not to be shown.
