The year before I only got one, the shrike-tits (Falcunculidae), although if you include mammals also I finally got my lifer wombat (Vombatidae) too. The Long-tailed Broadbill , the last one I got, was particularly satisfying, and was my bird of the year last year.

Amphibian’s and Reptiles: 3.4 This is not a surprise.

Near the town of Mareeba in the centre of the Tablelands, I didn’t visit it for birds, but instead to see a representative of that most Australian of animals, the kangaroo. The male in the shade He soon came out to see me though The feet of rock wallabies are relatively short for macropods (kangaroos and wallabies).

It’s not surprising that animals—especially, but not only, mammals—share many emotions with us because we also share brain structures—located in the limbic system—that are the seat of our emotions. After publishing my stories I got emails from people all over the world who had seen similar behavior in various birds and mammals.

And one final treat was a Musky Rat-kangaroo , the smallest member of the macropod (kangaroo and wallaby) suborder, no bigger than a guinea-pig. They are also apparently one of the easiest mammals to see in the forests of the Tableland. Oddly for small macropods you’ll find them out and about in the day.
