It is free to enter Serendip Sanctuary and as you drive or walk up the road into the parking area there are opportunities to see kangaroos and wallabies as you can see above. Red-rumped Parrot Purple-crowned Lorikeet There were plenty of New Holland Honeyeaters feeding in the trees, but of course the closest one got to me was on a wire fence!
The picnic area offers good opportunities to encounter Grey Kangaroos and they are particularly large animals. Grey Kangaroos at the Mundaring Weir picnic area. Red-capped Parrot -high in the trees! It was Western Australia’s first National park in 1900 and is set in jarrah forest and remains mostly in its natural state.
Emus roam the open areas, and surprisingly, various parrots, lorikeets or cockatoos can be found in most any major grove of trees. This Wedge-tailed Eagle was sitting along side one of the roads, eyeing a small road killed Kangaroo. But the diversity, that I have found to be Australia, remains.
We will be spending a good part of our holiday based in Mittagong as it is a central place to visit the Southern Highlands , Kangaroo Valley , the massive Morton National Park and no doubt we will head to the coast one day in search of a Hooded Plover or Double-banded Plover. As you first walk down the paths (or even park) the dominant species is not a bird but Eastern Grey Kangaroos, and lots of them. Also present were other parrots, including the gorgeous King Parrots , the dashing Galah and the Eastern Rosella. Campbell Park, Canberra.
And one final treat was a Musky Rat-kangaroo , the smallest member of the macropod (kangaroo and wallaby) suborder, no bigger than a guinea-pig. The flowering trees on the road through town are a good place to find Dusky Honeyeaters, Rainbow Lorikeets and Figbirds , and the stunning Red-winged Parrot is also present in the town.
