With the growing awareness of pet overpopulation more and more families are choosing to adopt a shelter dog and save a life. Rarely do shelters know anything about the dog’s history when they first come in and the longer a dog lives at the shelter the more impact it will have on their emotional well-being.

At an NYC puppy shelter a few weeks ago, my mind was just about made up when I met Chester – The cutest Lab puppy I’d ever seen. His large pouty eyes, silky fur-coat, and silly little paws on which he fumbled all over the hay-covered kennel, lured me in like a dog to a bone. The following is a guest post from Kevin Sloan.

NEW JERSEY – Animal shelters are full, they have no space, they often have no money, and they have a small amount of dedicated volunteers. There is an estimated 3-4million pets euthanized each year in US animal shelters. There is a strong lack of homes willing to open their doors to fostering a shelter pet.

On the pet side, the H3N8 virus, or canine influenza, has been a growing concern. H3N8 is the virus that causes flu in dogs, and while there are no known cases of a human catching the flu from their pet, it can be passed from dog to dog. Consult with your veterinarian to see if vaccine is appropriate for your pet.
