Killing Marine Life Whaling

What put this once small fishing town on the map was not birds but mammals, specifically whales and dolphins. Being a convenient stop between the ferry town of Picton and the city of Christchurch didn’t hurt, but it was the chance to get up close and personal with marine mammals that turned the place into a popular tourist destination.

It looks like the garbage didn't kill it, but still.just plain gross and unacceptable. A gray whale that died after stranding on a West Seattle beach had a large amount of trash in its stomach, ranging from a pair of sweatpants to a golf ball, said biologists who examined the animal. Looks like blue whales may be coming back to Alaska. From the Associated Press: Blue whales are returning to Alaska in search of food and could be re-establishing an old migration route several decades after they were nearly wiped out by commercial whalers, scientists say. Here's hoping Sarah Palin leaves them alone.

It looks like they are getting killed by ships as they try to eat krill. A bountiful crop of krill and busy shipping lanes are to blame for a rash of dead whales that have surfaced around the Bay Area within a few short months, according to scientists. Really sad.

There was also some plastic and pieces of rope, but there's no determination of what may have actually killed it. It's just another sign of the garbage we throw into the oceans. It was not emaciated so it's still a mystery as to whether what it consumed played a factor in its death. Full story here in Washington Post.
