Sometimes my job, which is for a New Jersey-wide labor union, requires me to meet in Bayonne, across the Hudson River, which at that point is indistinguishable from New York Harbor, from Staten Island. This often means that I end up with an hour or so to kill in Bayonne.

This was the downfall of an extremely competent New York City birder who recently saw a large wading bird fly by at a distance at Jamaica Bay with its neck extended. Other birders, smelling blood, moved in for the kill and the bird was revealed to be a Little Blue Heron flying with its neck extended for some unknown reason.

New York City killed less Canada Geese this year than any year since they started rounding the geese up and slaughtering them. The cullings have happened every year since the 2009 emergency landing of a US Airways plane in the Hudson River after the plane struck geese and was disabled.
