A Rüppell’s Parrot perched in an Acacia tree near a dry riverbed in Omaruru, central Namibia.

Others Reasons to Visit Cassowary House

A Southern Cassowary ( Casuarius casuarius ) that may have tried to kill me. There were also treats for fans of parrots, including a Double-eyed Fig-parrot and some King Parrots. Another great new bird I found walking about was the Mistletoebird , a tine flash of bright scarlet that is Australia’s only flowerpecker.

The Lost Macaw of Cuba

Formerly described in 1811 by Johann Matthäus Bechstein, the Cuban Macaw was a primarily red, long-tailed parrot with beautiful orange feathering around the nape and blue feathering on the wings and tail. This bird was in serious trouble by the mid-19th century due to the adults being killed for food and young being taken for pets.

Standing and staring.

I doubt anyone ever has (or ever will) cited “stop and watch the jackfruit”, but when you have an hour to kill in a city park in Sao Paulo, why not? There are also parrots in the park which would make good suspects. The strong bills of the parakeets made them contenders as the bird to have opened the tough fruit.
