They look crap but presumably offer some protection for the chicks, though not from each other (see the murderous activities within the nests in my previous post ). Tiphys died either of a snakebite or of a mysterious illness but he was not killed by either a tiger or a rhinoceros. Lucky him, right? Though he ended up dead anyway.

What methods are effective to protect an endangered crane species? And now for something completely different (Monty Python). On Hokkaido, the number rose from 33 in 1952 to about 1200 now, with the bird presumably benefiting from its symbolic importance for Japanese culture and its pull for tourists.

Birding beyond Brisbane

At high tide the shorebirds have a protection wall where they can roost on green lawn and feel safe. Sadly we did see a lot of road kill and no doubt a result of people driving at night. The other snake was a Carpet Python lying on the trail at Kondalilla Falls. It appears to work very well and the birds were relaxed.
