Tiphys died either of a snakebite or of a mysterious illness but he was not killed by either a tiger or a rhinoceros. He was also nearly strangled by a pet python that he kept. I guess he should have stuck with the substantially less dangerous trogons. Lucky him, right? Though he ended up dead anyway.
I was walking through the Cairns Botanical Gardens when close to the road I found a pair of them killing a snake on the ground. This pair were far too preoccupied with the snake they were killing to be interested in me, which allowed me to sneak up very close to them and take some photos.
And now for something completely different (Monty Python). At least the same website refutes the claim – apparently sometimes made in China – that the red blood and feathers of the crane’s head are toxic and were in the past used by some emperors to kill their least favorite ministers.
Is this really the nation that gave the world Monty Python?). Pros – it can kill you (like most proper Australian animals), is essentially a dinosaur. This awesome bird actually tried to kill me. Not that there is anything wrong with robins, they are fine birds, even if I prefer Pied Wagtails. Yes, I am five).
Sadly we did see a lot of road kill and no doubt a result of people driving at night. The other snake was a Carpet Python lying on the trail at Kondalilla Falls. Once we got beyond Mitchell we were starting to get bored of Emu, as we saw some every few minutes! Grant ignoring Emu.
