When I see a band I imagine something slipping beneath it and trapping the bird, I’ve seen photos of birds with so many bands it looks like they’re wearing stockings, and then there’s the awful story of Violet , whose band eventually killed her. And to prove it, there’s The Queen. The driver took her to a local nature center.

She can land on a transformer once then, the next time, be killed when she brushes up against the jumper wire. Part of the rabbit he had caught was still entangled in a nearby powerline. Knowing the dangling rabbit remains would be an irresistible target for other birds, Jayne called the local power company.

But one day, unbeknownst to her, a wild rabbit dug under the fence. She let her dog out, he spotted the rabbit, and took off like a bullet. She doesn’t use pesticides, she loves the local wildlife, and she does everything a good pet owner should do. Nina raced after him, screaming, but she couldn’t save the bunny.

Nonnative species have huge impacts on wildlife species everywhere… mice kill seabird chicks in their burrows, rats eat endangered bird eggs, overpopulated deer clear the understory of forests, pigs root out native plants and terrestrial animals, cats kill anything they can get their paws on. The logic of this is ridiculous.

To me, this is like giving a child a baby rabbit as a birthday present, and then when Harvey proves to be a bit too much to care for, bumping him off in front of her. The cranes liked the superabundant food, and a lot of them decided to hang around and spend the winter in Tennessee. The state’s response? It’s bad PR.

The island was being ravaged by rabbits that were destroying every last tree, threatening the future of three lizards and two snakes. Animal rights groups sued to prevent poison being used to kill the rabbits, and even told a mediator that they would rather every reptile on the island die than a single rabbit be killed.

Sometimes, I feel that competing bird conservation groups are trying too hard to get my attention and give the impression that just by sitting here on my futon and breathing, I have killed several birds. I’m now petting my rabbit Dougal, 6 more birds dead. I just looked over at my husband–bam 5 birds dead.
