The Lost Macaw of Cuba

10,000 Birds

The species that manage to colonize these islands evolve in competition with relatively few other species, developing survival strategies based on interdependence, co-evolution, and mutualism rather than adapting to deal with a broad range of predators and competitors. A species, wiped off the earth, never to exist again.

The Collared Finchbill

10,000 Birds

So, in order to show a few more photos of the bird than the usual two or three had I included this bird in a post of birds seen around Wolongshan, Sichuan), here is one dedicated to the species. 10,000 Birds

A personal encounter with a wild species changes one’s perspective. Inserts in rodent poisons that assure the public they will not kill anything but the offending rats or mice pedal the same questionable claims as those of the snake oil salesmen of bygone days. Will the population of the species be affected?

The Brown and Peruvian Pelicans

10,000 Birds

The Brown Pelican and the Peruvian Pelican are closely related and once were considered the same species. Both pelicans have a very specialized foraging strategy that depends on abundant fish near the surface. The species reached pre-pesticide numbers by the late 1990s and was fully delisted in 2009.
