The last beaver in the area was killed ten miles to the east – near Pancevo around the year 1900, but, reintroduced some dozen years ago, there are some 150 of them in the country nowadays. Whenever I pushed my paddle lower, I had the impression that there is no water and that I paddle on and though the mist, timeless and eternal.

Meet Tim; he’s a baby Olive Ridley Turtle. On this one morning when I first met Tim, I counted 110 Olive Ridley Turtle nests exploding out and scuttling for the “saftey” of the ocean. Oh, look at all those parallel lines running down the beach, those are all baby turtle tracks as far as the eye can see!

Twenty years ago, flocks consisting of a thousand European Turtle Doves were a common sight in Serbia in spring. Turtle Doves have been declining in Europe since the 1970s, and in this century alone, the continent has lost 40% of its population of the species. Ten years ago, those flocks were reduced to a few hundred birds.

Baby turtles and crocodiles are born as miniature versions of adults. Sure, turtles and crocs are tiny and vulnerable and most of them get eaten by monitor lizards, seagulls, big fish, or other predators. Some birds do this a little.
