And the two species were not inclined to get on, by which I mean that Lions will kill other large predators including Painted Wolves. Something was clearly badly wrong with both of his back legs, I’m no vet, but I would guess they had both been broken. And Pippa, our biologist, was very concerned. Her concern was well founded.

They pointed out the puncture wounds, likely infected with bacteria that could quickly kill. But, we’re facing a world of shrinking biodiversity and depressingly-high bird kill numbers that demand an accounting outside of our self interest. They simply helped me with my bird. Caring for our own is an element of survival.

A recent arrival at the Nairobi nursery was an elephant named Murka, rescued near Tsavo National Park with a spear lodged deep between her eyes and gaping spear and axe wounds along her back and sides. Her deep wounds were filled with maggots. A mobile vet unit was able to tranquilize her, clean her wounds, and extract the spear.
