Looks like blue whales may be coming back to Alaska. From the Associated Press: Blue whales are returning to Alaska in search of food and could be re-establishing an old migration route several decades after they were nearly wiped out by commercial whalers, scientists say. Here's hoping Sarah Palin leaves them alone.

New Zealand and Australia are joining forces to carry out research on whales using non-lethal methods, in an attempt to challenge Japan's hunting programme. There was also some plastic and pieces of rope, but there's no determination of what may have actually killed it. It's just another sign of the garbage we throw into the oceans. So, remember the incident in which an orca whale attacked and killed its trainer at Sea World? At a minimum, they should stop the captivity of orca whales. Now there's going to be a Congressional hearing this week about it. I sincerely hope this leads to a change in law regarding animals in captivity.

Nonnative species have huge impacts on wildlife species everywhere… mice kill seabird chicks in their burrows, rats eat endangered bird eggs, overpopulated deer clear the understory of forests, pigs root out native plants and terrestrial animals, cats kill anything they can get their paws on. The logic of this is ridiculous.

In recent years on two subsequent December nights, this single leopard killed 65 penguins, only feasting on a small percentage of the carcasses. Sharks, Cape Fur Seals and even Killer Whales will prey on them in the ocean. Obviously, the penguins are more vulnerable on land, hence their propensity to nest on offshore islands.

According to Reuters: Japan, which considers whaling to be a cherished cultural tradition, killed 679 minke whales despite plans to catch around 850. It caught just one fin whale compared with a target of 50 in the hunt that began in November. That's one result.
