What put this once small fishing town on the map was not birds but mammals, specifically whales and dolphins. The reason Kaikoura is such a great place to see albatrosses and whales is one and the same, and the same reason indeed that Monterrey in California is a great place to watch whales and albatross.
Gulls in Argentina have learned to land on Southern Right Whales as the whales come to the surface to breathe. The gulls then peck at the whales’ backs, causing wounds from which the gulls feed. Kill the gulls. The solution? There has to be a better way to deal with this, no?
A trainer was killed by a killer whale at SeaWorld. Hopefully they won't take this out on the killer whale for acting like a killer whale. Tags: Seaworld killer whales. And I don't mean that in a snarky way. It's a tragedy, but these are wild animals.
Of 679 whales reported to have been killed during the 2008-2009 whale hunt in Antarctica, 304 were female. Four of the female whales were lactating, and 192 were pregnant at the time of death. The Japanese government's "Cruise Report" gives gruesome details on the foetuses killed. Always classy.

Looks like blue whales may be coming back to Alaska. From the Associated Press: Blue whales are returning to Alaska in search of food and could be re-establishing an old migration route several decades after they were nearly wiped out by commercial whalers, scientists say. Here's hoping Sarah Palin leaves them alone.

Sarah Palin, who I am sure reads the latest science journals when she isn't perusing the latest issue of the Economist, doesn't believe beluga whales are declining. Or maybe there isn't enough money in killing off the rest. Tags: beluga whale Palin. Fortunately, even the Bush Administration thinks they are.
Nonnative species have huge impacts on wildlife species everywhere… mice kill seabird chicks in their burrows, rats eat endangered bird eggs, overpopulated deer clear the understory of forests, pigs root out native plants and terrestrial animals, cats kill anything they can get their paws on. The logic of this is ridiculous.
The fish charge at the shore and virtually beach themselves in an effort to grab the unwary birds, in the style of a Crocodile taking a Wildebeest or a Killer Whale taking a pinniped. Some (but not most) killer whales beach themselves on land or ice to get at sea mammals or penguins, and some dolphins do similar things. Boulêtreau, S.,
They are ridiculously unafraid of people there – so the cynic in me suspects that swan meat is not regarded as tasty by the Japanese (another explanation, that the Japanese just like animals too much, can presumably be discarded given the country’s very principled approach in insisting on the right to killwhales).
Furthermore we have another very special stork-like bird, the regal Shoebill , previously known as the Whale-headed Stork but now placed in its own family. Marabous have also learnt another trick, and that is to follow vultures and scavenge off the remains of Lion and other large predator kills.
In recent years on two subsequent December nights, this single leopard killed 65 penguins, only feasting on a small percentage of the carcasses. Sharks, Cape Fur Seals and even Killer Whales will prey on them in the ocean. Obviously, the penguins are more vulnerable on land, hence their propensity to nest on offshore islands.
So, remember the incident in which an orca whale attacked and killed its trainer at Sea World? At a minimum, they should stop the captivity of orca whales. Now there's going to be a Congressional hearing this week about it. I sincerely hope this leads to a change in law regarding animals in captivity.
There was also some plastic and pieces of rope, but there's no determination of what may have actually killed it. It's just another sign of the garbage we throw into the oceans. It was not emaciated so it's still a mystery as to whether what it consumed played a factor in its death. Full story here in Washington Post.
We went to settle into our room, and since I had about an hour to kill before dinner, I took a quick walk around the property. The group we were with mentioned that they had seen Minke Whales just off the coast of the fjords the day before, but we missed out on our drive back south.
