“We had a call one morning about a snake and a hawk,” says Tom Sweets, the executive director and chief rescuer of the Key West Wildlife Center , located at the very tip of Florida. The snake was wrapped firmly around the hawk’s tail, neck, and wings, and had enough strength to immobilize the bird but not to kill him.

The wolves suffer needlessly because hunters simply wound them more often then not firing from an airplane. Here is a video from Defenders of Wildlife that shows the method (it's under 3 minutes). Doing it from low flying aircraft, however, is just barbaric. This is what Palin has pushed for.

Many people find themselves with a few hours to kill during transit and could potentially add a few ticks to their trip list as they pass through. Security is taken very seriously in the aviation business and discretion is better than having to explain yourself to tightly wound security personnel.

Some people think it’s just plain fun to kill enormous numbers of animals and pile up their bodies, and when there’s no “bag limit” it’s legal to do so. Obviously killing contests have nothing to do with traditional hunting, and “animal abuse” is normally used when describing domestic animals. This is baloney.

Even as a veteran wildlife rehabilitator, I could scarcely believe the sight before me. In mammals, maggots eat only dead tissue and are occasionally used to debride wounds. But in birds they eat living tissue, and once they are internal will kill the patient. If there is an entrance wound, there is an exit wound.

Almost every single outdoor pet cat, feral cat, or stray kills other animals , no matter how well fed the cat is through other sources. I can also remember the fleas they brought home to share with us and the wounds they would get from unknown sources.

Years ago, I became a wildlife volunteer and advocate because of a cat who caught a bird. The wildlife center was an hour away if I was lucky. That was my first trip to California Wildlife Center. I’d rescued birds before, but this time I had to face the wildlife center with a personal connection to the carnage.
