If you’re not willing to go through the trials of house-training a young puppy or kitten, opting for an older shelter animal is an easy option. Most shelter animals are spayed or neutered, have been treated for worms, and have at least their first set of shots.

For kittens and puppies, most any time is play time. Older pets still need love and attention, but they don’t require babysitting like a frisky puppy or curious kitten. They require little training since they already know the rules. The same is true for our pets. I think senior cats project an air of peaceful dignity.

Train, Train, Train. Train your pet for as long as possible and familiarize it with the venue beforehand if you want to include it as a ring bearer or flower-pet.
