Lazy like a Koala

It was challenging in tall trees, but what was surprising to us were the number of Koalas that we came across as we looked up. Koalas are not the most active of creatures and they always seem to be eating or sleeping and very rarely moving. Oh, birders…… Another busy day for this Koala!

Rufous Fantail and other forest surprises

I raised my binoculars and there was one huge male Koala relaxing in the fork of the tall tree. There’s a Koala in this photo! Koala-circled to show you the location! The Koala becomes obvious when you zoom in a bit! Then to my surprise I saw another nest. He had not observed Rufous Fantails since we arrived.

RECENT BIRDING AT COORAN, SUNSHINE COAST

A crop of Eucalypt trees had been planted and clearly coppiced, apparently to feed recovering koalas from Steve Irwin’s [he of Crocodile Hunter fame] family’s zoo and wildlife hospital. Laughing Kookaburras, Torresian Crows, Pied Currawongs were all seen, heard and expected.

It is probably a rumor that writing a post about Australia and not mentioning Koalas is illegal, but why take the risk? Indeed, it seems Australian members of the oriole family are not fond of yellow, as demonstrated by this Olive-backed Oriole. Like the figbird, it mostly feeds on fruit.

Australian Firefighter Rescues Koala

Here's a video of an Australian firefighter making a big difference to one little koala. Lots of people have died in the wildfires in Australia, and I'm sure a lot of animals have suffered too. Foster to Fish Creek

Koalas live in the forest around here, but you do not always see them. Whilst walking along the trail I have sometimes been lucky enough to notice an odd shape in the trees. When I do see them I always stop and take a photograph! They are an easy subject, because they never move particularly fast!

One of the main attractions for overseas visitors is the Koala boardwalk where the only Koalas in Western Australia live. The Koala is not native to Western Australia, but a small population was introduced in 1938 and they continue to reside in the Yanchep National Park. Grey Kangaroos.
