First Post-COVID-19 Birding Trip: Wisconsin and Horicon NWR

In late June, I flew into O’Hare and drove north to Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. However, I had never actually visited a WPA, and Wisconsin has several relatively close to Horicon NWR. So my criteria were as much about birding locations as they were about birds.

For example, the main article states that “At Lac de Grand Lieu, W France, birds commute 2–38 km between colony and feeding territories.” (I know, easy to say for a German after having lost a couple of world wars, but still true). The HBW also has some interesting details about the Grey Heron.

You may be happy to have a flock of chickadees visit your backyard, but it is difficult to ignore hundreds of American White Pelicans streaming by. Some birds breed in flocks, at least in part to avoid predation.

And, it is a guide based on scholarship as well as field work (author Reeber has monitored the birds of the Lac of Grand-Lieu, France, for the National Society for Nature Protection (SNPN) since 1994). This is a hefty book, a little larger than a standard hardcover, but long (656 pages), and the good quality paper makes it heavy.
