But, when I checked eBird to make sure I had my facts straight, I found only one sighting listed this far from the coast, and it was by the legendary ornithologist Chester Lamb… in 1951! Admittedly, many coastal species extend their range inland over the Río Balsas basin. That sighting was, in fact, only a few miles from mine.

When I was still a meat-eater, the two foods I would not touch were veal and lamb. Bo Obama celebrated his birthday with a doghouse cake made out of veal. Veal is especially cruel, even for factory farming, although now I think foie gras is a strong competitor. Certainly disappointed in the Obamas for such a poor choice of "cake."

The cuisine was magnificent, especially lamb. The bear walks are relatively easy and, while possible in sneakers, some light ankle-support hiking shoes might be preferable. Also, trekking poles proved useful. At one occasion, during the hike Tsanakis collected wild mushrooms and in a restaurant, asked the chef to prepare those for us.
