Our group watching the first Snow Leopard from a knoll above our camp in Hemis National Park. At this very spot, on our first afternoon in the park, and within half an hour of officially beginning our Snow Leopard search, our expert local spotter had exclaimed “ Shan !!” – the Ladakhi name for Snow Leopard.

They are not necessarily the biggest African animals, but represented those that were considered a real hunter’s worthy prey or “game” – the African Elephant, Cape Buffalo, Black Rhinoceros, Leopard and king of the jungle, the Lion (which of course doesn’t inhabit jungle but savanna!). At 8am on Tuesday 30th August 2012, we arrived at Leeudril after leaving nearby Tweerivieren camp and were thrilled to spot a young female Leopard next to the water tank. You can notice in the above images how the Leopard uses her eye-lids as hoods to protect her sensitive eyes from the bright sun as she sprinted towards us.
My group watched this leopard walking parallel to the road, then back into the grass, and then–whooop–up a tree, where he relaxed while being watched by people in at least twenty vehicles. The leopards place their kill in a tree, protecting it from poaching by other predators.
What is truly remarkable is that our quarry was a newly discovered species of leopard frog. While the Richmond Ribbiter looks very much like the other leopard frogs, its calls are quite distinct – a single “cluck” unlike the “chuckle” of the Southern Leopard Frog , and even less like the “snore” of the Northern Leopard Frog.
The migration is also tracked by many of the park’s predators and great numbers of Lion, Cheetah, Leopard, Spotted Hyena, jackal and giant Nile Crocodile take advantage of this massive glut of protein, especially during the calving season when up to 8,000 Wildebeest calves are dropped per day!
Remarkably, this growing colony suffered severe losses from a leopard that habitually came down from the mountains to feast on the easy penguin snacks. In recent years on two subsequent December nights, this single leopard killed 65 penguins, only feasting on a small percentage of the carcasses.
For you and me, there are about 200 bird species, but for proper tourists, there seem to be only five species in the reserve: Bengal Tiger , Leopard , Sloth Bear , Indian Wild Dog (Dhole) and the Gaur. One of them has a scarred shoulder, claw marks, but not big enough for Tiger – probably a Leopard.

Thinking about what might come next once I see some of these, I feel like the Okapi, one of the tapirs, or perhaps even a Clouded or Snow Leopard could make the list even less do-able. This isn’t a target for this trip that I am aiming for, because this is a nemesis species for me.
It’s the only park I have ever been to that not only have I seen all five of the Big Five (Lion, Leopard, African Buffalo, White Rhino and African Elephant) in, but seen them all on the same day. Leopards are also awesome and I saw two at Madikwe. Having been to some other parks in Africa, it’s an improvement.
For there is no species that I had more comprehensively failed to see than the Leopard. I had, after all, been to 13 countries that were home to leopards, over the course of 14 years, of which in all but one I had been in habitat suitable for this most adaptable of big cats. Leopards were problem species for me. What an animal!

And, when a Leopard Frog moved to escape my car, the Cattle Egret was proven correct. While I was at the Space Coast Birding and Wildlife Festival in January I spent most of one afternoon taking my time driving around the Viera Wetlands and digiscoping anything that crossed my path. The frog was big but the bird was determined.
