For the first time in North America a case of rustrela virus infection, also known as staggering disease, has been identified in a wild mountain lion. Researchers are encouraging further investigations to determine just how prevalent the virus is in area wildlife.
Assuming you have a passing interest in wildlife, or at the least you know someone that does, and chances are in the last week or so you’ve become aware that some lady from America shot a lion. I’m glad she shot that lion, and I think you should shoot a lion too (Only where valid, terms and conditions apply.
Still, for the majority of visitors, there seem to be only one species – some of the last of the 400 remaining Asiatic Lions ( Panthera leo persica ). Therefore, it is quite annoying to hear a common question from a passing Maruti Gypsy: “Have you seen the lions?” “Yes, Yes, we did – so what? We’re here for the birds!”.
Mountain lions, bottlenose dolphins, and striped skunks are among a long list of wild animals infected during the largest outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza virus in U.S.
Though it took place in a zoo the video below definitely shows some wild behavior. If you don’t want to see a bird killed and eaten then don’t watch it. Instead may I recommend some cuteness ?) If you have the stomach for nature, red in tooth and claw, then watch away! Crazy, no?
A new National Geographic movie, The Last Lions, opened this past weekend in Washington, DC. The movie is about saving lions, and they are doing some really fun promotions to help spread the movie around the country. Download the free (and very fun) photo app, The Last Lions. Have an iPhone or iPad?
Finally, in my e-mailbox this morning, and probably in yours, was the Care2 newsletter, including a link to a column about a restaurant in Arizona that will soon serve burgers made from lion meat. I was curious about why it's so terrible to eat lions. Lions aren't food in our culture. But that wasn't it either.
I've been reading a lot about threatened elephants and primate populations in Africa and wondered about lions. Kenya's lion population has dropped from an estimated 2,749 in 2002 to 2,280 in 2004 and probably just 2000 individuals in 2009. Tags: africa Kenya lion endangered species. One rarely hears about how they are doing.
Though I wrote about the mountain lions of the Kofa National Wildlife Refuge a couple of times, it was never with the breadth and depth that Deb Durant of Invisible Voices has. I'm always fascinated by the procedure for determining what the public wants and then what actually occurs as a result.
Take these pesky Lions for instance. Some signal passed between the two Lions and they both rose together and began circling each other. They seemed antagonistic and restless but moments later we discovered we clearly had no idea how to read Lion behaviour. Her breathing was audible over the sound of rain on the roof.
Sea lions are killed here for eating salmon. We all know that it's not the sea lions' fault that the salmon runs are either threatened or endangered. Tags: State of Washington salmon Stupid sea lions dams endangered species. Sorry, another Washington State story. It really makes me angry.
Charismatic megafauna abounds throughout the park, and folks would be forgiven for overlooking a sparrow-lark while lions battle buffalo in front an audience consisting of everything from bite… Source
SeaWorld San Antonio is thrilled to announce the arrival of seven California sea lion pups born in June. Park guests … Continue reading → The post Cute California sea lion pups appeared first on 4 The Love of Animals. They are adorable, and full of energy!
Let's pick the sea lions! Portland judge said Wednesday the Northwest states can kill hungry sea lions on the Columbia River. Judge Michael Mosman’s ruling means Washington, Oregon and Idaho can shoot or remove up to 85 sea lions next year. The group’s Sharon Young says fisheries managers are using the sea lions as scapegoats.
Meet the biggest pride in the Kingdom of the Great White Lion, “Kaiser’s Pride.” It is home to four stunning large males: Alex, Kaiser, Rafiki and Siam, three of which are white lions, some of the rarest in the world. It sounds interesting to me, I’ll have to add it to the DVR right away. Monday, September 6, 2010 at 9 PM ET/PT.
They are not necessarily the biggest African animals, but represented those that were considered a real hunter’s worthy prey or “game” – the African Elephant, Cape Buffalo, Black Rhinoceros, Leopard and king of the jungle, the Lion (which of course doesn’t inhabit jungle but savanna!). In Asia they are even commonly kept as pets!
Here's someone else who agrees with me that sea lions are not the true threat to salmon. It's just easier to kill sea lions that to break down dams. She highlights dams, but that is only one of the four H's (hydro, harvest, habitat and hatcheries) that are obliterating this beautiful creature.
In the mornings, and I use that term loosely, we would set out to monitor the Lions. Lions were re-introduced to the park a few years ago and have done so well the park now serves as a source of Lions for translocations. The first Lions to be re-introduced to Rwanda a few days ago were sourced from Tembe. And how!
The Federal government has approved the killing of California Sea Lions in the Columbia River, blaming them for killing and eating endangered salmon. Never mind the main reasons for the problems with the salmon: hatcheries, human harvest, hydropower and the destruction of habitat.
Along with delightful meerkats, lions, plentiful game and solitude, the Makgadikgadi hosts some great birds like White-quilled Korhaan, Secretarybird and various species of sandgrouse and desert birds like larks.
As a month, January is like March for birding, coming in like a lion as everyone tears into a fresh, new year list, but going out like a lamb as we gradually recognize how little bird movement really takes place this time of year. Try to overcome the urge to wait until the next migration; get outside this weekend!
But worry not… regardless of weather conditions, this month goes out like a lion when it comes to birds on the move! September has been flush with weekends this year, but all good months must come to an end. This weekend, I’ll continue searching for local fall migrants, hopefully not in vain.
This month comes in like a lamb, unless you’re paying attention to fall migration, in which case the lion is roaring right now. October much resembles March in these parts, but reversed in polarity. I don’t know why I’ve done this to myself, but I’ve been working every weekend morning.
The Mountain Lion struck and killed by a car in Connecticut in June has been confirmed as a wild animal. Its journey originated in South Dakota, 1,500 miles to the west! The last confirmed sighting of a cougar in Connecticut was in the late 1800s.
While March earns a reputation for coming in like a lion, the season rarely seems as wild and cold as Winter Storm Titan threatens to be over the next few days in the American Northeast, Midwest, and Mid-Atlantic. Some may consider talking about the weather banal, but I can’t help complaining during a winter like this.
Multi-million-dollar homes, fancy restaurants, rugged swimming, California sea lions, and close-up looks at some birds. The cove itself is a small beach surrounded by sandstone cliffs and a natural platform where the sea lions haul out. As you approach, the combined odor of seabird excrement and sea lions fills the air.
March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb and all that rot. Wouldn’t you love to visit Cape Kidnappers in NZ, where Duncan Wright has enjoyed sauvignon and seabirds ? What matters more to me is how this month comes in like decrepit winter and goes out like nascent spring, early migrants and all!
The Republic of Trinidad and Tobago may share equal billing in the dichotomous nation’s name, but Trinidad boasts the lion’s share of the land mass, population, and hummingbirds. My focus during my June 2012 visit was obviously on the hummingbirds.
Together with 4 bird photos and one of the Asiatic Lion , for which Gir NP is famous, there is very little text on the park. In The 100 Birdwatching Sites in India I haven’t noticed a single park guide to be recommended and visiting birders certainly want to know which guides know their birds. But that is not the only thing.
Ahold Delhaize—the global company behind Food Lion, Giant Food, Hannaford, and Stop & Shop—is under fire for failing animals. Despite publicly claiming to support animal welfare, the company has delayed its goals and failed to report meaningful progress on its existing promises.
The migration is also tracked by many of the park’s predators and great numbers of Lion, Cheetah, Leopard, Spotted Hyena, jackal and giant Nile Crocodile take advantage of this massive glut of protein, especially during the calving season when up to 8,000 Wildebeest calves are dropped per day!
And now he working on the animals, starting with lions. Walter Kitundu of Bird Light Wind has an amazing four - part photographic series of the birds of Tanzania. These images are well worth clicking through for, I promise!
For instance, you can own a lion in Alabama, but not in California. They can spend a little more money and effort, and get an Exhibitor Permit for public display. One’s ability to own an exotic species varies from state to state. You can own a gorilla in Indiana, but not a bear in Michigan.
Despite being an ordinary family with the usual interests in elephants, lions, tigers and the likes (there are sadly no Banded Pittas at Heidelberg Zoo), there is one feature that has been our main attraction and focus for the last few months: the duck pond.
It’s the only park I have ever been to that not only have I seen all five of the Big Five (Lion, Leopard, African Buffalo, White Rhino and African Elephant) in, but seen them all on the same day. Lions are boring and should be avoided on safari, but I quite liked this one, even if he had ticks.
A California Sea-lion surfaced close by, making me jump and spooking the birds, but they soon returned. The rocks, made a great platform to shoot from and kept my silhouette hidden. By sitting quietly, the birds would gradually work their way along the edge and approach quite close.
In India, f orensic tests helped establish guilt in the killing of 10 endangered lions. Between February and March 2007, 10 lions were killed by poachers in three different incidents at the Gir National Park (GNP) which houses 360 Asiatic lions, the only surviving population in the wild. The link was clearly established.
Mosethla Bush Camp guide awaits us by the open Land Rover and with a loaded rifle in front of the steering wheel, we continue into the bush (oddly, while observing lions and tigers in India, not a single rifle was in sight). The dirt road winds in between rocky outcrops – kopjes, by Burchell’s Zebras and Greater Kudus.
On that first trip, I even saw some of the last 500 (Asiatic) Lions ! Ahead of the first trip, I wasn’t thinking much about mammals, and yet, you cannot miss them, from Nilgais near villages to Indian Flying Foxes in town centres, not to mention those ubiquitous and irresistibly cute Palm Squirrels eating seeds left for parakeets.
Incidentally, encounters with both aardvarks and zorillas are rare – it’s much easier to see lions and leopards. Lion – much easier to see than an Aardvark In contrast to East Africa, encounters with mammals while out birding in Europe are relatively few. We also saw a leopard, but it was the A to Z that sticks in the mind.
And then he did something incredible: the man made notes in his guidebook… On a first trip to Kruger with Elephant , Lion , Cape Buffalo , Kudu , Steenbok , vultures and so much else going on this ended up being nothing more than an oddity, a “ huh, look at that ” moment. Sofar, nothing new.
Though, honestly, Brown Violetears are pretty bland as hummingbirds go even when they are roaring like a mighty lion. One of the things that make trips to the Neotropics great is hummingbirds like this Brown Violetear at Pico Bonito. Trogons are not boring. Bronzed Cowbirds are surprisingly attractive.
Still, for the majority of visitors, there seem to be only one species – some of the last of the 670 remaining Asiatic Lions ( Panthera leo persica ). Therefore, it is quite annoying to hear a common question from a passing Maruti Gypsy: “Have you seen the lions?” “Yes, Yes, we did – so what? We’re here for the birds!”
