Thank a lemming

Many of you in the south are enjoying great sightings of Snowy Owls ( Bubo scandiacus ) this winter. Everywhere on Facebook I see friends and acquaintance posting photos of Snowy Owls , and or status updates on how they’ve succeeded or failed in their search for reported birds. Why is that? Did I mention they’re fast?

Woodland for sale

The real upside is that it is right by my house and the Tawny Owls occasionally stray into my oak tree at night. All terrain vehicle enthusiasts ripped swathes through the wild flowers and fireraisers left the burnt out shuck of a car, so there will almost certainly be work parties to clear the litter and debris. Feeder stations!

Into Guyana’s Interior

Driving slowly along the entrance road to the lodge we came upon a lone Marail Guan dabbling in the leaf litter nearby. Walking through the forest we were smitten by the setting more than the creatures – it was invigorating to walk among giant trees, mossy vines, and soft leaf litter. Go owling, naturally!

More Encouragement to Bird at Home

We had shared our porch with a bold Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl the night before, so the expectation was there. I remained with my eyes peeled, and sure enough, within a few short minutes I spotted the quivering black and white under-tail of a Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl. Eventually the birds lost interest and left. I photographed it some more.

High Elevation Birding in Costa Rica at Providencia

Passing through the high oak dominated rainforests of Quetzal National Park, this road can also turn up Unspotted Saw-whet Owls and other species of the night but is much more birdy during the day. The night was understandably cool, not quite freezing but cool enough to warrant a sweater and jacket at this high elevation birding hotspot.

Largely because of the same reason this past summer was a such a good year for Snowy Owls , resulting in a huge irruption of them into the south, we are seeing huge numbers of Arctic Hares this spring. Last summer saw lemmings at a high point in their population cycles.
